The president of Minnesota Farmers Union wants Congress to consider the next farm bill a matter of national security.
Gary Wertish says he met with Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack this summer and they agreed the 2023 Farm Bill needs a bigger budget.
“He says ‘I don’t know why we stick to baseline funding’ because he compared it to our defense budget (pointing out) it doesn’t have a baseline, and he said ‘(the farm bill) is just as important to our security.”
Speaking to Brownfield at the Minnesota State Fair Friday, he says it will be an uphill battle to increase base funding.
