A food economist says food prices are heading in the right direction in the New Year, but several issues still need to be resolved before meaningful relief is seen.

David Ortega with Michigan State University tells Brownfield grocery prices are about 12 percent higher than in 2021 but are coming down from August highs.

“When we see the rate of inflation start to decrease, it doesn’t mean that things will be getting cheaper—it’s just that they’re not going to be getting as expensive as quickly,” he says.
