A slow-moving frontal boundary stretching from the Northwest into the Southeast will gradually lift northward while remaining a focus for scattered showers and thunderstorms.  The front will also separate cooler air across the North from building heat in the South.

Weekend temperatures will surge to 90°F or higher as far north as the central Plains and the middle Mississippi Valley.  By early next week, temperatures will also approach or reach 90°F in the southern Atlantic States.  In contrast, generally cool conditions will cover much of the West.

Five-day precipitation totals should reach 1 to 2 inches or more in much of the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys, as well as the nation’s northern tier as far east as the Great Lakes States.
