The former chief ag negotiator at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said other countries are watching how the United States handles Mexico’s GMO corn ban.

Answering a question in a House Ag Subcommittee hearing, Gregg Doud said he thinks the European Union could use this to keep products out. And he said it’s unfortunate Mexico is not using science to make decisions.

“This is a play of domestic political consumption.”

Doud said the new enforcement mechanism included in the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement can be put to the test.
