Advancements in satellite imaging could one day replace USDA’s voluntary crop surveys.

Michigan State University professor Bruno Basso tells Brownfield he’s currently working with the United Nations to track crop production for the Food and Agriculture Organization.

“We have a funded project that looks at how the same system that we use in Michigan to quantify soil carbon could help local governments to quantify the amount of food that is produced—so crop yield forecasting,” he says.
