Farm bill budget constraints are likely to limit significant investments into land grant research facilities, but some members of Congress are exploring other possibilities.
Michigan State University AgBioResearch Director George Smith tells Brownfield the cost of just deferred maintenance to keep facilities operational was estimated at $11.5 billion dollars pre-pandemic.
“We’re not going to be able to compete with China, we’re not going to be able to compete with the European Union and really lead the world in agriculture innovation if we don’t catch up in terms of our facilities,” he says.
