A farmer in southern Minnesota says the sugarbeets did better than expected in first round of pre-pile harvest for the Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative.

Nate Hultgren, who farms near Raymond and is chairman of the board for the cooperative, says the hot, dry weather has caused variability in the tonnage, but sugar content is good.

“At this point, we probably don’t want much more rain,” he says. “The sugar percentages are really strong for this point in the season.”

Hultgren says tonnage is expected in the high 20s to 30 tons per acre.
