U.S. poultry production declined in September.
The USDA says 4.276 billion pounds of poultry were certified wholesome last month, a drop of 5% from a year ago. Chicken production fell 5% to 3.834 billion pounds, canceling out a 2% rise in turkey production to 429.76 million pounds.
Average live weights for all chickens and turkeys were above a year ago, at 6.62 pounds and 31.56 pounds, respectively, while the chicken slaughter decreased 6% to 767.269 million head and the turkey slaughter was slightly lower at 17.143 million head.
