The president and CEO of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives says fundamental differences remain between lawmakers as a new farm bill is drafted.
Chuck Conner tells Brownfield one challenge is finding new money to update the commodities title. He says some lawmakers would like to use a portion of the $20 billion available for conservation programs in the Inflation Reduction Act and others don’t want to touch that money.
“It’s one of the reasons we haven’t seen anything in terms of a potential farm bill draft.”
Conner says there are additional dollars from the nutrition title of the farm bill that have also been declared off limits by some lawmakers.
