A livestock economist says producers need to take advantage of the dynamic shift that has given cow/calf and feeder cattle producers more leverage. University of Kentucky’s Kenny Burdine says expansion is one option to potentially improve profitability, but it isn’t the only one.  “Maybe they want to look at things like okay, what can I do to set myself up to be profitable and more normal here,” he says.  “Maybe that means paying down some debt.
