Farmers made less in September than in August, while paying just a little bit more.
The USDA’s index of prices received fell 2.9% as lower prices for corn, soybeans, hogs, and lettuce more than canceled out higher moves for milk, broilers, grapes, and broccoli.
The dairy index for September 2023 was up 6.6% from August, but down 13% from September 2022, with an all milk price of $21 per hundredweight, $1.30 above the prior month, but $3.10 lower than last year.
