Bay County, Michigan has reported its first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza since the virus was detected in the state in 2022.

The virus was confirmed in a backyard flock that contained approximately 50 birds of various species. The birds have been depopulated, and the premises is under quarantine.

Michigan state veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland says most cases detected in backyard flocks have involved direct or indirect contact with wild birds.
