Weather was mostly warm and wet in Wisconsin as 2024 kicked off.

The USDA says the average statewide temperature for December was just above freezing, allowing producers to wrap up fall fieldwork and apply manure, while statewide precipitation was two tenths of an inch higher than usual, but most of that was rain, keeping most of the state free of snow and frost.

Those warmer temperatures did lead some alfalfa to break dormancy, which could cause some damage later this winter.
