The USDA has launched a pilot program that will allow cow-calf producers to insure weaned calves.
Risk Management Agency Administrator Marcia Bunger details the Weaned Calf Risk Protection program.
“The product is going to mitigate loss of weight to those calves when they’re weaned due to a catastrophic weather event,” she explains. “In addition, that particular product also factors in calf loss.”
Bunger tells Brownfield the need to provide coverage for weaned calves became evident after Winter Storm Atlas in 2013 killed tens of thousands of cattle.
