Better than average January precipitation was not enough to fully alleviate drought in Michigan.

The USDA says average statewide precipitation was nearly an inch above normal, which did raise Michigan’s overall soil moisture levels, but more than half of the state remains abnormally dry, an issue for overwintering crops and spring planting.

52% of Michigan’s winter wheat crop is in good to excellent shape, 10% above last month, but 9% below last year.
