The likelihood of a new high-capacity soybean crushing facility in southern Wisconsin has researchers studying something they’ve never been comfortable with… beans on beans.

Shawn Conley with the University of Wisconsin Soybean Program tells Brownfield the proposed CHS facility will tempt a lot of farmers to try growing continuous soybeans. “I think the economics in some of these local areas in southern Wisconsin might push farmers to think about growing beans on beans, and I’d like to have some management recommendations besides don’t do it.”

Conley says with a new crush plant creating demand and perhaps altering market prices and basis, farmers will want to take advantage of the opportunity.
