The Iowa DNR says last month’s massive fertilizer spill in Montgomery County has killed more than 749,000 fish in the East Nishnabotna River.
In a press release, the agency says nearly all fish in a 50-mile stretch of the river to the Missouri border have died, with more expected near the confluence with the Missouri River.
On March 11th, 1500 tons of liquid nitrogen fertilizer, or 265,000 gallons, discharged into a drainage ditch from an aboveground storage tank at NEW Cooperative in Red Oak.
