Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in a central Michigan commercial poultry facility located in Ionia County. This is fourth detection in a commercial facility in the state since 2022. HPAI was recently confirmed on a dairy operation in neighboring Montcalm County.
State veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland says the weather remains cool and wild birds continue to migrate creating conditions that are ideal for the virus to thrive and spread.
To protect other facilities in Michigan, the premises is currently under quarantine. The birds will be depopulated to prevent spread of the virus.
