USDA says milk production in April was slightly lower than March and April of 2023.
USDA says April milk production was 18.3 billion pounds in the 24 primary dairy producing states and 19.1 billion pounds nationwide. That’s about 500 million pounds less than the previous month and 69 million pounds less than the nationwide April 2023 total.
The number of milk cows in the 24 major dairy states was down 55 thousand head from a year ago. California has the most dairy cattle with 1.7 million head producing 3.54 billion pounds of milk followed by Wisconsin with 1.2 million head producing 2.72 billion pounds of milk. Michigan continues to have the highest milk per cow average with 23 hundred pounds per cow.
