U.S. red meat in cold storage fell during April.
The USDA says the red meat total at the start of May was 955.905 million pounds, 9% below a year ago, largely due to solid demand as monthly production was up sharply from last year.
Beef in cold storage was 5% lower on the year at 430.683 million pounds and pork had a drop of 8% to 501.279 million pounds.
The poultry numbers reflect mixed demand, with the total 1.38 billion pounds 6% under the prior year, with a 10% year-to-year decline for chicken to 743.819 million pounds partially canceled out by a 6% increase for turkey to 390.598 million pounds.
