Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in a third Iowa dairy herd.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says the case involves a farm in Sioux County in the northwest part of the state.

Dairy producers are instructed to contact their herd veterinarian if clinical signs of H5N1 appear, including a decrease in food consumption, clear nasal discharge, a drop in milk production, and lethargy.

Two of the three dairy herds affected by avian flu have been in Sioux County, with the third in neighboring O’Brien County.
