When planting a tree in your yard, it is important to get all of the research done before any hole is dug and any sapling or small tree is planted. DNR District Forester, Joe Herring, says once that tree is in the ground, its not moving. He says one of the first steps is figuring out which species of tree you want, and they all grow at different rates.

He says right now Iowa is over saturated with Maple Trees and Oak Trees are beginning to be lost across the state. He says there is a good tool to use to help pick the best type of tree.

Herring also says to look up for any wires overhead or how close the spot is to a building. He mentions the State Forest Nursery is in Ames where people can purchase saplings and other small trees.
