Monday night a vehicle caught fire at the Iowa Veterans Home and 2 staff members went to the Emergency Room. According to the Iowa Veterans Home, around 10pm Monday, a maintenance contractor was conducting hood-cleaning operations for the Atha Dining Room kitchen outside of the Malloy Building when equipment in the vehicle unexpectedly caught fire.

Staff immediately executed prescribed and rehearsed fire safety procedures and Marshalltown first responders were on the scene in minutes. The Marshalltown Fire Department brought the fire under control upon arrival and deemed the situation safe to resume normal operations before midnight.

During the fire, smoke was drawn in through the HVAC system and some residents were evacuated to a different part of the building where there was no smoke.

Further details are still under investigation and IVH will conduct a thorough review of safety measures, but at this time it appears all standards and practices were followed in accordance with emergency plans.
