Thursday last week the planning and zoning committee met and one of the topics of discussion was to rezone a parcel of land in downtown Marshalltown. The parcel is at 212 E State St. or the Northwest corner of E State St. and N 3rd Ave. and recommendation from the planning and zoning committee was to rezone it from urban core to mixed use. This will allow the developer to build a McDonald’s with a drive-thru, a second location in Marshalltown as there is a McDonald’s just off of highway 30 on Center Street.
One current city councilor, Melisa Fonseca and candidate in Ward 1 Marco Yepez-Gomez both spoke against the rezoning idea. Both were against bringing a big corporation to compete with the Mom and Pop shops of downtown Marshalltown. The planning and zoning committee voted in favor of rezoning the parcel on a 7 – 0 vote.
