October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and according to Dr. Alison Wilson with McFarland Clinic, it is the most common Cancer among women in Iowa. She says anyone can get Breast Cancer, men and women, so we need to be aware of the signs and how to do a self-exam.
A self-exam is exactly like it sounds, a person feeling their chest and examining their chest for any changes. If a lump is found during a self-exam, Dr. Wilson says the best step is to contact your primary medical provider.
Dr. Wilson says there are no screening guidelines for men but for women a mammogram is suggested every other year starting between 40 and 45.
The one thing that Dr. Wilson wants people to remember is that Breast Cancer is treatable especially if caught early.
