Last night the Marshalltown City Council discussed expanding the number of cameras across Marshalltown. Captain Kiel Stevenson with the Marshalltown Police Department shares that the current Flock licenses plate reader cameras have led to over 160 arrests.
Captain Stevenson says the strategic plan called for the expansion of the Flock Camera program. He says they are looking at two different types of Cameras.
He says they are also looking at cameras for downtown Marshalltown
Captain Stevenson says there are some of these cameras already in the area, this is calling for some more coverage. They want to pay for the additional cameras from the Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) camera still on Lincoln Way. That money has been earmarked for Body and Car Cameras previously. Police Chief Chris Jones spoke next.
Gary Thompson made the motion to have staff bring back a plan to use $100,000 in LOST to pay for more cameras for the Police Department. This passed on a 4-3 vote with Fonseca, Ladehoff, and Nichols voting against it.
