The head of the Michigan Department of Agriculture expects food processing revitalization efforts to increase in the coming years.

Gary McDowell tells Brownfield the department is reviewing processing opportunities, with an emphasis on meat, following supply chain disruptions brought to light by COVID which will support local rural communities.

Bringing “More opportunities for our farmers and also our consumers to know where their food came from,” he says.

He says small and large processing are vital for strengthening markets for farmers.
