Cheboygan County has confirmed its first bovine tuberculosis positive cattle herd since testing began in the late ‘90s.

The beef herd in the northern lower Michigan county tested positive as part of routine testing in Michigan’s Accredited Free Zone, the buffer zone surrounding Michigan’s Modified Accredited Zone where 18 deer and three cattle herds were confirmed positive last year.

The herd will be quarantined while additional testing is done to help determine the strain of infection as well as trace investigations to identify any potential additional cases.  Officials say the last positive TB case in Cheboygan was confirmed in two free ranging white-tailed deer in 2010.
