It’s shaping up to be an early start to the growing season in southeast Iowa.

Mahaska County corn and soybean grower Mark Jackson tells Brownfield conditions are steadily improving.

“We’ve been getting small rains the last month or so, probably accumulated 3 inches in that timeframe. Nothing heavy, nothing erosive.”

He says the frost is out of the ground and soil temps are in the upper 40’s.

“So it wouldn’t take much for that scenario (of getting to 50 and above) to move forward.”

Jackson no-till drills his soybeans and uses a twin-line corn planter.
