Valois Ann Jensen Brintnall was born on December 27, 1928 in Estherville, Iowa to Chris and Stena Jensen and she grew up in Graettinger, Iowa. She was very proud of her 100% Danish heritage. She was Valedictorian of her graduation from Graettinger Public Schools in 1946. She graduated from Grinnell College in 1950 with a BA in English, with a minor in Music and Spanish. She also attended University of Minnesota for some post graduate studies in Interior Design. Valois taught English and Spanish at Indianola High School. She also worked at Pako Corporation in Minneapolis in personnel and Carpenter Paper Company in Des Moines as a secretary, before moving to Marshalltown in 1954.
Valois met Lee Brintnall at Grinnell College and they married in November, 1952. She was the mother of David, Barbara and Grant, a housewife devoted to her children and family, while providing many charitable hours to the community. Valois and Lee traveled the world on cruises and land tours for many years and managed to go just about everywhere in the world during their travels. They also enjoyed visiting family and friends and provided countless hours of babysitting time over the years for their six grandchildren, both in Iowa and Texas. She was the director of the Bell Choir at First Congregational Church for 23 years and Valois participated in Church choirs as a vocalist for 78 years. Yes, 78 years in church choirs! She was known for her beautiful alto voice and often performed solos for all to enjoy. Valois contributed to Marshalltown Community Theatre as a director, actress and board member, as well as a soloist for Galas. She participated as a member of the board of the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra. Valois was an active member of many organizations, including P.E.O., Marshalltown Assistance League, Tuesday Musical, Starpha, Madeira Book Club, Marshalltown Art Center and Culture, Birthday Club, and many Bridge Clubs. She was a wonderful entertainer and held many delightful parties in her homes over many decades. Valois was a local artist who proudly held three solo showings of her paintings at the Marshalltown Art Center. She was also known for her needlework both knitting and needlepoint. Valois sold countless pieces of her artful creations and those pieces of art are preciously owned by those fortunate enough to have them. She also enjoyed playing the piano and instilled an appreciation for music.
Valois is survived by her daughter, Barbara Hohlfelder (Barry), her son, Grant Brintnall (Connie Hodges), her six grandchildren; Justin, Brett and Will Deltuva and Sam, David and Olivia Brintnall, three great grandchildren, Aspen, Bodhi and Cairo Deltuva and her brother Ron. She was preceded in death by her parents, son David, 2 brothers and her husband of 68 years, Lee, who passed in January, 2021, only 207 days before she joined him in heaven. She was a loving mother, a good friend to many and she will be missed by all.
