The North American Meat Institute is calling for a moratorium on enforcement of California’s Proposition 12 which is set for January first of next year.
The Meat Institute’s chief operating officer Mark Dopp says pork packers and processors are ‘on hold’ anyway until final rules are issued and have no guidance on how to comply with the law to avoid the risk of criminal prosecution.
At a recent public hearing on the proposed rules, he said the California Department of Food and Agriculture missed the rule-making deadline and should delay enforcement at least 28 months after final rules are published.
