African Swine Fever (ASF) was identified in Eastern Africa in the early 1900’s and it remained restricted on that continent until 1957. In the 1960’s ASF lost all respect for borders, spreading into Portugal. An outbreak in Cuba in 1971 resulted in the disposal of half a million pigs to keep the virus from spreading. In the 1980’s, outbreaks occurred in France, Belgium and other European countries. Due to a slaughter policy, Spain and Portugal effectively eradicated ASF by the mid-90’s.
