January in Michigan has been colder and drier than normal.

The USDA says 26% of Michigan is abnormally dry at best with 7% in moderate drought conditions, most of that in the southwestern portion of the Upper Peninsula, in contrast to the much largely adequate to surplus soil moisture levels in the Southern Peninsula.

39% of Michigan’s winter wheat crop is in good to excellent shape, down 4% from late December, with the fair category holding at 35%.
