A jury in Pennsylvania has ordered Bayer to pay $2.25 billion as part of a Roundup lawsuit.

Court records show the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas ruled in favor of the plaintiff, who claimed Roundup caused his cancer diagnosis after using the product for two decades. The plaintiff was awarded $250 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages.

In a statement, Bayer says it disagrees “with the jury’s adverse verdict that conflicts with the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence and worldwide regulatory and scientific assessments.”

Bayer officials have said the company will appeal the decision.
