Drier than normal weather has been an issue in most of Indiana during January.
The USDA says the state started the year with plenty of precipitation, but conditions turned drier even as temperatures moved closer to normal, still averaging more than five degrees above typical levels.
Most of Indiana still has adequate soil moisture, but 24% of topsoil is now short to very short, up 10%, and 31% of subsoil is short to very short, 9% higher.
