Collaborative Dance-Painting-Happening at the Memorial Union

The Iowa State Memorial Union is hosting Des Moines artist Amenda Tate and Manibus, a robotic painting device, on Thursday, August 30 from 6-8pm in the Pioneer Room. Tate created Manibus to capture and translate movement into painted works of art. A dancer wears a motion-sensing remote that prompts the robot to render a depiction of elapsed time and motion. The works take shape as dynamic linear renderings in acrylic on paper.

Those attending are welcome to participate in a collaborative dance-painting, or come to watch the process. Twenty-five Manibus paintings are on display in the Pioneer Room through September 11, 2018.

Tate developed Manibus while she was Artist in Residence at Ballet Des Moines in 2017, and named it after the Latin translation of “the hand.” A video of the process can be found at https://vimeo.com/203858643.

This event is free and open to the public. The Iowa State Memorial Union is located at 2229 Lincoln Way in Ames on the ISU campus. For more information visit www.mu.iastate.edu/exhibits.
