A vote no campaign is underway in Marshalltown for the August 2nd vote to finance the new police and fire station buildings. Tim Nichols is behind the effort. Advertising has been purchased on the electronic billboard over the Center Street viaduct and information is being made available on the internet at a site called Marshalltown Just Vote No. Nichols says while he does not doubt the need for new space for the police station he feels the overall cost of 17.5 million dollars for the project exceeds the national average cost per square foot for the project, and the space is more than the police department needs and feels the fire department does not need the new space in the first place. Meanwhile the count down to election day continues which is August 2nd. Tours are being offered of both facilities on July 24th and 31st between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. to those who would like to see the facilities for themselves. Absentee balloting continues at the Marshall County Courthouse during normal business hours and also via the mail. A 60 percent yes vote will be needed for the measure to pass.
