Hot weather will linger for a few more days across the West, followed by a late-weekend transition to markedly cooler conditions. Meanwhile, most of the central and eastern U.S. will experience a gradual transition to near- or above-normal temperatures. Rain will subside across the South, while late-week showers and thunderstorms will become more numerous in the North. Five-day rainfall could total 1 to 3 inches in northern sections of the Rockies and High Plains, and 1 to 2 inches in parts of the Midwest.
