Producers of plant-based meat substitutes are suing the State of Oklahoma over its Meat Consumer Protection Act.
The new law will require the imitation foods to have labels showing the products are plant-based in the “same size and prominence” as their product name. Starting in November, plant-based foods will not be able to use the terms poultry, beef, or pork without the proper disclaimer.
Upton’s Naturals Co. of Illinois and the Plant-Based Foods Association (PBFA) are seeking an injunction in Oklahoma in federal court to block the new law from taking effect. The plaintiffs say the new law is a content-based regulation of speech that violates the First Amendment.
